Pain can be difficult to interpret. An aching shoulder may come from an overworked muscle, a painful joint or even an irritated nerve. Similarly, pain that starts in the back can sometimes travel into an arm or leg, making its source less obvious.

So, how can pain be identified as muscular, joint-related or nerve-related? 

The quality of the pain, where it is felt, what triggers it and whether other symptoms such as swelling, stiffness, tingling or numbness are present can offer important clues. Understanding these differences can help determine when self-care may be reasonable and when a medical evaluation is needed.

How Does Muscular Pain Usually Feel?

Muscular pain often feels like a dull, deep ache, soreness, tightness or occasional sharp pain within a particular muscle group.

It may develop:

Why can the same injury cause different types of pain?

An injury may affect multiple tissues at once, such as muscles, joints and nearby nerves, producing overlapping symptoms.

Depending on the suspected cause, further tests such as X-rays, MRI scans, blood tests or nerve-function tests may be recommended. Imaging is not always necessary; the appropriate investigation depends on the symptoms and clinical findings.
